Wildlife Rehabilitation
Description
We have three nurseries, an exam room, office, kitchen, 5 songbird habitats, 3 mammal habitats, water bird area with a pond, and a flight cage for large raptors. Our staff and volunteers take in over 1200 animals each year from the Fremont, Newark and Union City areas in need of professional and specialized care. So what is wildlife rehabilitation? Wildlife rehabilitation is working with veterinarians to assess injuries and illnesses, administering basic first aid, understanding nutrition, behavior, and housing for all native and non-native California wildlife species. Wildlife rehabilitators are trained to assess if wildlife needs rescue, as well as how to safely capture, rescue, handle, and transport these wild animals. They have specific facilities and habitats to house wildlife. They provide specific diets to meet the needs of different species. They know when, where, and how to release wildlife. At our facility we are required to have the necessary permits and licenses to posses and care for California native and non-native wildlife. Rehabilitating wildlife requires a lot of time ranging anywhere from 15 hour shifts to round the clock care feeding orphaned and injured wildlife. In 2007 our rehabilitation center released 40% of the animals we had taken in for treatment back into the environment.
